Truth be told I had never heard of these guys, and seeing as how I love me some post-rock, it was shocking that they had a ton of releases under their belt. So with fresh ears and an open mind I gave this album a spin not knowing at all what to expect, and what I was given was nothing short of delightful. Immediately what I loved about TAD is their inclusion of ambient and electronic elements, be it a backing synth or programmed drum beat it just pushes them away from the normal post rock crowd and makes them that dense and delicious Epic45 style category.
But a little back-story, The American Dollar is a New York post-rock band who incorporate ambient and electronic elements into their airy post-rock soup. Like the many other acts of post-rock this album lacks any sort of vocals, so the instrumentation is solely in charge of impressing. The overall sound is a whimsical array of keyboard and synth work backing up streaming guitar and drum work that results in a weaving in and out of the clouds feel as the tracks progress over time. The production on this is really good, it appears that they did get a little reverb happy, but I like it, and it adds character and depth to the tracks. Also the instruments can all clearly be heard on this, as well as the accompanying electronics, so there really is nothing at all to complain about with Awake in the City, it’s just a fun as hell album that makes for perfect sitting-in-the-dark-with-headphones-on listening.
SHIT RATING: GOOD
